Kitchen Space Solutions

As many of you know, we have an issue with kitchen storage space. We have all of five cupboards in our main kitchen area, four of which I can actually reach.  One is filled with pots, one with pans, another with dishes which leaves one cupboard for pantry items.  I’ve had so many canned goods fall out on me, I’ve started to cringe and turn away when opening the pantry cupboard.  You guys have seen my clever storage solutions for entertaining items or for items we don’t use regularly, but what to do with the everyday used spices and pantry goods has been stumping me.

That is until this weekend, when Matt came home with my $40 hero which simply attached to the inside of my laundry room door.

Look how happy I am to have an organized pantry space.  I guess Matt is kind of my hero too for thinking of such an amazing solution.

Like Gretchen Rubin said during her keynote speech at Alt, “Outer order contributes to inner calm”.  And I completely agree.

Have a CALM and ORDERLY Tuesday!

The Bright Side

I was all reared and ready to get painting my shelves but, like most things in life, Matt reminded me about all of the little aspects of this project that should be figured out before we paint.  Light fixtures were one of those things.

Since my original inspiration drawings, I’ve been really excited to put some swing arm sconces in to the bedroom remodel.  I’m drawn to how antiquely modern they can be – which is kind of the mix I’m going for in this room.  I love these two options above from Arcadian Lighting, although I’m strongly leaning toward the dark rubbed bronze one by Lite Source (plus it’s most cost efficient).

I’m excited that the swing arm wall sconces give me the flexibility to put lights right where I want them, since they plug in!

What are your thoughts?  Can you envision it?

Have a BRIGHT Monday!

*This post is sponsored by Arcadian Lighting, however the point of view is my own.  Aside from bedside wall sconces, they have some pretty amazing pendant lighting too, check them out if you get a chance!

Friday Faves 1.27

I have been such a mixture of things this week. Inspired from last week at ALT, but also busy and hectic with all of the work that needed to be done on my return. I am taking this weekend to remind myself of all of the amazing opportunities that lie out in the world – if only we’d pursue and follow through.

For my “faves” today, I’m sharing with you some of the most influential NEW people I met at Alt.  Tons of established and new bloggers that I met, but these girls stood out to me – and for wonderful reasons!

Victoria from Vmac + Cheese: Vmac + Cheese is a daily lifestyle blog which shares everything from food to fashion to just plain living the stylish life. Victoria is one of those rare people who has both a fierce business sense and is utterly creative.  She is bringing new inspiration everyday to Vmac + Cheese and also has some super exciting ideas and plans in store for this year!

Michelle from Second St East was my safe place for the week.  When you’re walking into an event where you know nobody and there are 500 stylish girls running around, you need a safe place. She is super funny and fun, has a great sense of style both on her blog about interior design and in her personal fashion style.  An all around sweet and bubbly personality drew to me her and will keep me coming back to her blog to see her progress through design projects and interior design school.

Colleen over at Inspired to Share: I stumbled upon Inspired to Share a few months ago on the interwebs and was hooked ever since.  Meeting Colleen in person was certainly a treat as she is just as quirky and cute in real life as she comes across on her blog.  Colleen has an inspiring design sense and can put ideas, color, and pattern together in new and beautiful ways.  Her photoshop skills are enviable too! Maybe I can learn a thing or two in my PS journey! (check out her wedding – it was the cutest!)

Megan from The Fresh Exchange:  We met on Wednesday night at the blog brunch gathering.  After chatting at various times throughout the week, we realized that we have a ton in common.  She has such a fresh and calm take on design and her beautiful blog reflects it!

Amy from Parker Etc:  If I could draw you a picture of the coolest Brooklyn girl, it would be Amy.  She personifies hip, heritage, and feminine New York.  Her blog showcases eye candy ranging from outfits to home projects.

Katie over at Modern Eve: Sweet as can be, Katie shows off her amazing style, party, decor, and travel insights on Modern Eve.  (I didn’t mean for that to rhyme!)  Katie is one of those beautiful, fashionable people who is so relatable and it really shows through on her blog.

Amanda of Simple Street: I am so proud of Amanda!  She recently just took the leap, believed in herself, and quit her day job to freelance and start her own graphic design company.  She has a beautifully simple esthetic and showcases it both on her blog and through her design work.  I am really excited to say that Amanda will be working with me on my blog redesign coming to you soon!

I really hope you take a moment and look through these new blogs and get to know the amazing personalities behind each site!

Have an INSPIRED Friday!

Style Splurge: Design Books

We’ve all seen books used as a foundation (no pun intended) for many a styling photoshoot around the web and in magazines.  The thing is, once you’re in front of them in a book store, the price tag is sometimes a little intimidating.  Sure, they’re only $20ish bucks a piece, but if you get enough to make a statement on a shelf, there you are spending a few hundo on some design books.

The above (and below) books are some that I’ve invested in this past year, and I’ll tell you my secret – buy used.  I bought a few of these titles through Amazon and they were actually old library books! Can you believe it?  I like that they had a little bit of character too with the library names stamped on the inside.

In case you’re interested, here are the books I’ve purchased recently and the links to them!

For the MinimalistSimply Scandinavian by Sara Norrman; For the VoyerThe Selby is in Your Place by Todd Selby; For the TraditionalistLars Bolander’s Scandinavian Design by Heather Smith MacIsaac; For the Trend SetterDomino, The Book of Decorating by domino editors Deborah Needleman, Sara Ruffin Costello, and Dara Caponigro; For the DIYerDesign Sponge at Home by Grace Bonney; For the WhimsicalDecorate by Holly Becker and Joanna Copestick.

Woohoo!  (I just felt like saying that) Any of your favorite design books you’d like to share?

Have an AWE-INSPIRING Thursday!

Have, Make: Treat Cones

Have a newspaper lying around? Make some pretty and purposeful treat cones for your next party (or superbowl gathering?).  Fill the cones with anything your little heart desires and stick them in a pretty vase or tin to hold them upright for your guests.

Have, Make will be one of my new regular series!  I am going to take one household item, and turn it into something new, fun or useful for your home!  How do you like this idea?

Have a GREAT Wednesday, guys!

A Drink and a Chat with Emily Henderson

I had an amazing opportunity over the weekend to sit down with Emily Henderson, from the HGTV show Secrets from a Stylist, to chat shopping, design, and the future.  I hope you’re as excited to hear from her as I was to sit and have a drink with her (she had a sauvignon blanc and me, prosecco).

House of Earnest: You do a lot of vintage shopping, do you feel like an item ‘picks’ you?

Emily: Yes, I get really anxious if a really good piece goes without me buying it.  If it’s awesome, I buy it and I find a place for it. So much from the show just comes from my apartment, it’s like a rotating thing.  I call it ‘fostering’ and if I  buy something that’s amazing and don’t have a need for it, I know that somebody at some point is going to get it.

H of E: Starting out as a prop stylist is a different animal than straight interior design.  How was that learning curve?

E: The thing I got wrong the most was scale. I would buy this awesome sofa, then these great chairs and wouldn’t think about how they would fit together.  I thought my instinct was good enough, but it’s not.  You just have to measure.  Also, you have to think about the size of the house in relation to the scale of the furniture.  There was one episode that never aired, but you can watch it on HGTV.com; but it was a really big house and I had brought in a sofa and two chairs and you can see throughout the episode that I had gone back to the store and switched out the chairs like three times.  I ended up buying two sofas facing each other because it was the only think that worked.  After that I was like, big houses need big furniture.

H of E: How do you strike a balance between staying true to your style and aesthetic and still giving the clients what they want?

E: Most of the clients I have come from the blog or the show, so they know my style.  There are certain cases where someone has wanted me to do something that is kinda out of my style realm, but it depends on how different it is or how big the project is.  For example, I wouldn’t do something super tech-y or something that has a ton of plumbing or electrical work involved. When it feels like work, I don’t want to do it.  It feels like anxiety and keeps me up at night.

H of E: We see your process play out on TV, but how do you incorporate your styling aesthetic into your everyday life?

E: I think that my style is pretty consistent through fashion, or how I throw a party.  Style is very much across the board.  Analyze your outfit, is it fitted or sexy or conservative. Do you love a lot of accessories or none, is your hair loose and messy or tied back into a bun.  These things are style indicators. Interior design isn’t just about interior design – it’s about lifestyle and it makes sense that it’s consistent through everything you do.

H of E: What’s Next?

E: Another season of Secrets from a Stylist is starting this spring, but I’d also like to buy a house – we’re saving – and have babies.  My house will definitely be a fixer upper…I think it would be fun for HGTV to do a show on that.

I hope you have some new insight and are inspired to go out there and curate your own space.  Take the time to check out Emily’s blog Style by Emily Henderson and (of course) watch her show on HGTV!  You can watch past episodes on HGTV.com. I’d like to send out a big THANK YOU to Emily for taking the time to sit and chat with me for House of Earnest!

Have a FANTASTIC Tuesday!

Superb Shelf Surprise

As you know, I spend the better part of last week and the weekend in Salt Lake City for Alt Design Summit. I learned a TON and need a moment to process all of the information! Do you guys want to hear more about it, or are you going to throw up if I mention it again and you want me to just get on with the regular show?

Regardless, today is about the shelf surprise that I came home to at 11pm last night. Matt had been working feverishly all weekend to put together the shelves we had planned to install in our master bedroom. I was blown away by how amazing they were.  At one point, Matt asked me what was wrong because I was silent (which doesn’t often happen).  They just looked so grand, it took me a while to process.

Everything was exactly as I had planned, and better than I had imagined. I am so excited to get them painted and styled (after all, the styling is my favorite part).

I took off from work today and tomorrow to recover from being out of town, but you know instead of relaxing, I’m off to the store to get some white paint and get going on this!  As always, I’ll show you the next installment of our home progress next Monday (have you guys realized that? I only show my home renovation projects on Mondays?).

Have a SUPERB Monday!

ONE cutest paris inspired notepad from pinhole press and the girls with glasses. TWO custom pencils which I really love, but cannot figure out who contributed them!  Let me know if you do! THREE mini gallery printed from minted. FOUR nyc map magnets from cutie pie company, but their stationery is even cuter – check it out!!

We have been showered with SO many free goodies and treats since being here in at Alt Summit.  I’m learning a TON about blog design and how to make it better for all of my lovely readers out there!  Check up on some of these vendors who so generously donated items for all of the attendees of the conference!

Have a FABULOUS Friday!

Local Color: Crystal Clear

LOCAL winter trees with crystal white snow. COLOR stunning lucite trunk from Jayson Home and Garden $1395

Boy, do I love waking up in a ski town (makes me miss living in Colorado).  I am so excited to be heading out this morning to ALT summit to not only learn more about blogging from some of the best in the business, but also to enrich my creative side and meet some blog friends in person!  I hope to come back with a crazy new amount of knowledge that I can use in this blog to make it better than ever!

Have a COLORFUL Thursday! (not a color-less one like the trunk above)

House of Earnest is Turning ONE!

Today is my very first blogiversary! Can you believe it?

I sure can’t.

Part of me feels like I’ve been blogging forever and another part of me still feels like I’ve just skimmed the surface of all I want to do an accomplish here! I have so many exciting plans and goals for year TWO:

  1. Improve my photography (and consequently my photographic documentation that I post)
  2. Start a couple of regular column-style posts (one is coming tomorrow!)
  3. Learn photoshop (got it for my birthday last week, so now I’m ready to learn!)
  4. Post more fun DIYs (and get one in print!)
  5. Post more original ideas and content that you won’t see splashed across every other part of the internet
  6. Get more reader interaction going on
  7. Tweak and refine my branding, graphics, and site design.
  8. Collaborate with some other bloggers to increase the variety and voice of the blog
  9. Secure some amazing sponsors!

So that’s all I can think of at this moment, but there are always about a billion goals swimming around in my brain. I dream way bigger than my mental capacity can sometimes handle! I am just beside myself excited for what’s to come!  It is kind of ironic that I head out today for my very first blogging design conference – my mind is going to be blown!

Cheers to another year!  (clink)

Have a HAPPY HAPPY Wednesday!
