Dining Room Art

During my house tour I listed new art in the dining room as one of the things I was hoping to update. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I wrote about art as a style splurge and about how much I wanted to buy a piece for my dining room.

With everything going on in the household right now, I couldn’t justify the splurge, so I decided to DIY a piece of abstract art until I could buy something that really caught my eye. I used a cheapo print that I had purchased at Home Goods for around $30.  It was cheaper than buying an actual canvas, and it came with a gold frame that I really liked!

I wanted to incorporate bright, happy, and fun colors to lift the spirits in my dining room.

Don’t get me wrong, I still would love to buy one of these puppies, but it will just have to wait.  In the meantime, I’m quite enjoying my little creation.

Have a BRIGHT and CHEERY Wednesday!

It looks ah-mazing! I hate to go there, but a lot of this style of artwork is totally doable on your own. Nice work!

Mandy- I thought the same exact thing before I started, but it ended up being pretty difficult! I definitely need more practice!

i love it!!!!!!!!!! what kind of paint did you use??

    • Erin March 26, 2012 at 5:58 pm #

Hi Diana, I used acrylics that I found in the art aisle at Joann fabrics! I just bought the little starter set with around 12 or so colors and then mixed my own from there!

What?! This is so so gorgeous…I love the colors and the entire look! Maybe someone should consider painting and selling art as a hobby?? :)

Ok, at first I totally thought you were going to say this is the piece you wanted to splurge on but DIY’d instead. This is nothing sort of magnificent- really. It’d be my splurge.

ok so u didn’t explain about anything u did to it? or did I miss it?

    • Erin April 11, 2012 at 6:02 pm #

Hi CDR! This post is geared toward the idea of making your own art out of a piece/print you already own. After the whole background is painted white, it’s really just a free for all! I hope you try it and have fun!

I am obsessed and totally inspired! And I love the idea of using the frame/canvas all in one!

    • House of Earnest May 14, 2012 at 5:10 pm #

Thanks, Julie! It was actually cheaper to buy this from Homegoods and paint over it than to buy a canvas and frame separately.

Erin – I love this idea! I might need to do it with the kids to make an abstract piece for their playroom! XX

That is so pretty I just the colors. There is nothing like special artwork for the dinning room. I just found your blog through your article on ETSY. Your blog is so beautiful and it’s such a good blog. I can’t wait to come back to visit and comment it’s so inspiring.

LOVE this! I’ve always thought about trying this…maybe you need to make a few to sell!

Such a great idea to use a cheapo piece of art… frame and canvas all in one!! Did you see the project that Dabito shared? It was very similar. He used a piece of art that he thrifted and painted right over it too!
