Splurge and Save: Navy Velvet Sofas

splurge save navy velvet sofa

I love navy velvet sofas and have always wanted one, but I’m just so afraid they’ll go out of fashion (although that seems like a preposterous idea) so I’ve never wanted to purchase a real pricey one.  As absolutely stunning as the Mitchell and Gold sofa is, West Elm also has a style for about half the price.

What do you guys think?  Is this something you’d go all the way on, or save?

p.s. I like a little nailhead trip like I used here would be perfect on the West Elm sofa!

We’re actually planning to get a navy linen sectional by the end of the year! I like both of these options for the velvet version– though the Mitchell Gold looks like it’s just waiting to be sunk into! I think we’ll be getting ours from Room & Board, though.

Hi, I love your blog and your home. I had a navy sofa but it always had lint and blond hair on it so I put a pottery barn cover on it and now we use it in the family room I now have tan which is neutral and you cant see lint yeah! just wanted to let you know but those are beautiful sofas. sincerely Karen S

I just bought a new sofa, and it was such an agonizing decision! (Hey when you’re planning to keep a larger piece like a couch for a long time, it’s a big choice.) I also love navy velvet sofas, but have the same fear of them being “trendy.” I would go with West Elm version here for sure. Much more budget friendly, and I don’t think it’s much of a compromise. It’s a beautiful sofa!

It is an agonizing decision! For mine, I bought something really cheap and neutral because I couldn’t decide and needed something. So it awarded me a lot more time to plan/plot for my more permanent choice!

I love the look of this navy velvet sofa and I actually prefer the West Elm version. I’m currently sofa shopping for my semi-new apartment; we just painted our walls blue and I think this sofa would look so great against the color we chose!

OOhhhhh! A blue on blue tonal would be amazing!! If you do it, you’ve GOT to send a photo!

I believe in saving on furniture….I’m a Gemini. So I change my taste almost as much as I change my handbags. Anyhow, a save is always great!

I LOVE West Elm, I really do. We have several things in our home from them and are pleased with the quality and the look.

But our sofa from them has not held up well. Maybe it’s the particular model we got, but the foam in the cushions is completely flat and crumbling in less than 4 years of normal use. I rotate the cushions each week, we’re not major couch potatoes, don’t have animals, probably sit on it about an hour each evening, but you would think we never sat anywhere else from looking at it. The fabric is also not colorfast, meaning any stains that you use a gentle, safe cleaner on leave large spots where the dye is now discolored.

I say this not to knock West Elm, because as I said above, I own many things from them that I love. But I’m pretty bummed about the sofa. Like you, I thought we were buying a “grown up, permanent” sofa and it hasn’t lasted as long as my cheap Ikea one I had in college did.

hmm… Very interesting! The cheap one I bought was like $700 at one of those furniture mega stores and after 3 years it’s ok… I suppose it’s so hard to know without advanced knowledge of furniture construction and price is very rarely an indicator!

100% agree! Expensive does not equal quality and cheap does not necessarily equal disposable. Maybe ask them about the cushions on this particular model, and get a fabric swatch to test? That’s the only way to know, I suppose. Either way, I love both options for the navy sofa!

Go out of style? Never! I think the look is classic and stunning. I’d buy the best quality I could afford ;-D

    Hi Erin!

I love a navy velvet couch, and I think it’s an updated classic, so I wouldn’t worry about it going out of style. I love those choices above, but I’d love to add Society Social to your list. The couches are handcrafted in North Carolina, and they’re surprisingly affordable custom upholstery. Most are around the price of the West Elm option, but you’ll actually know where it’s being made.
